“Good fortune often happens when opportunity meets with preparation.”
― Thomas A. Edison
“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”
― Winston S. Churchill

Some opportunities repeat itself every so often but there are also once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. In self-defence, a missed opportunity can cost a life.

Common causes for missed opportunities:

  • It may be an opportunity for someone else but not high enough priority for me
  • We didn’t know our goals and didn’t want to commit
  • We failed to see a specific situation as an opportunity
  • We thought the chance of success is slim and the fear for failing paralysed us from even trying
  • We assumed erroneously that the door will never close and therefore sit on the opportunity
  • We were just not ready for the opportunity and therefore cannot cash in on it
  • We waited for a very specific scenario and not flexible/adaptive enough to make use of imperfect scenarios
  • We waited for the opportunity to come when we should have taken an active role in the creation of opportunities
  • We gave up halfway because we did not persevere to make full use of an opportunity.

Knockouts represent successfully captured opportunities.

Opporunities apply to more than just fights and can be jobs, relationships or anything that matter to you. It can even apply to taking martial arts class. The fact that our path cross is an opportunity in itself. It is up to us to make best use of it.

Pick one of the two topic and discuss:

  • Try to see and describe a couple of the KO opportunities from the video. (Give me the time parameter as well so I know what you are describing)
  • Look back at yourself and describe one of your biggest missed opportunities (jobs, exams, whatever) and whether you are more equipped to capitalize on it now
