A copy of a hundred dollar bill is not worth its face value. Having a hundred dollar bill that is only printed on one side will not work too well either.

Copying martial arts moves (or forms) may be good enough for performances. Just repeating what I said does not mean you can re-apply it. To make a technique yours, you need to have a much deeper understanding with lots of repetitions.

Last week, some of you have trouble remembering what ARGOS is. A lot of good tries but nobody got all aspects. Some have all the correct keywords but have trouble guessing/explaining what it is. The following highlight some improvement opportunities:

  • If you cannot remember what ARGOS is, wouldn’t to work together with someone or simply ask? Did you maximize your retention by writing notes after class? After class, did you check your responses and see what you missed or what I added?
  • Most of you didn’t complete your homework until Tuesday right before class. I don’t have too much time before class to read all of the responses – do you think you are “making the best out of a learning opportunity”? Try aim for Monday evening.
  • Some teachers like their students to just accept whatever they say. However, I like my students to actively learn, think and experiment (while being respectful). Don’t be shy about asking for help!

Exercise
Remember that these weekly exercises give BOTH me AND you some indication of what you remember and understand – so use it to its fullest. Don’t treat it as school assignments.

As exercise, I want you to comment on your own response from last week and compare it to what we have discussed during class. Furthermore, I haven’t completed talking about ARGOS, what do you think I have yet to cover?
