You don’t have to be an environmentalist to be able to understand that reduce, reuse and recycle make perfect sense. Guess what, the same principles are applicable to our approach in martial arts too:

  • Reduce –
    • reduce energy used to neutralize a threat
    • switch it off when not in used
    • maximize effectiveness / damage with minimum wastage
    • find, mix and use alternate sources of energy and/or resources
  • Reuse
    • simplify principles so that it can be used over and over again
    • make movements simple so that the same / similar move can be used in more circumstances than one
    • ideas that works can be applied in more than one way
  • Recycle
    • convert and leverage off your opponent’s forces, energy, fear and amplify it towards your purpose
    • connect moves without fighting your own momentum but rather convert, flow and draw from previous moves and intent
    • understand and use the natural cycles of energy waves from its initiation to exhaustion and then to rebuilding.

Exercise

  • list sources of energy that do not involve muscles
  • give an example of the type of simplification that we did
  • explain “understand and use the natural cycles of energy waves from its initiation to exhaustion and then to rebuilding
