Self assessment is always required to know if you are on the right track. As you can see in this blog, just throwing a few hundred punches a day may not give you the desired results. To be effective, a technique must have an impact on your opponent. (If you do not know what SDAA is, read last week’s blog).

Self SDAA
Sensory
– do you know what to look for?
– can you sense what your opponent’s ultimate goal is? can you feel his approach?
– do you know anything about his strengths and weaknesses?
– can you put his intention in the spotlight so that it become obvious?
Decision
– do you have an overall strategy?
– are you waiting for an opening that may not show up? Can you cause the opening to happen?
– can you flow and take advantage of the opening when it shows up?
– how simple are your decisions?
– are you happy with imperfect solutions?
– are you reluctant to make decisions because you are afraid of being wrong?
– are you willing to take risks?
Action
– can you kick into action the moment a decision is made or you need to prepare?
– how fast is your punch? Do you have the right mechanics?
– how productive/effective is your punch given the effort and level of commitment? are your moves simple so that it is powerful and yet uncommitted?
Adapt
– do you have a feel for how he might counter?
– are your adaptations very specific or can it cover a range of possibilities?
– how tense / committed are you after your hit connected?
– are you ready to adapt if your hit missed?

SDAA in relationship with the opponent
Sensory
– are you telegraphing (i.e. giving him visual hints that something is coming) unintentionally? e.g. resetting, tension on the shoulder/chest, subtle pull back of the arms, eyes, etc
– can you catch his attention?
– can you cause him to be biased or be over-sensitive or be over-loaded?
Decision
– can you create doubts or questions in his mind?
– can you cause him to make judgement errors?
– can you make him predictable?
Action
– can you move faster than he can?
– can you cause him to start late?
– can you cause him to have to travel more than you do?
Adaptation
– can you cause him to commit?
– can you trigger tension?
– can you cause him to be off balance?
– can you delay his adapt reflex?
– can you take away/consume his resources so that he will have trouble adapting over time?
